October 31, 1955: Wealthy New York manufacturer, Richard T. Shubert, 35, allowed himself to be arrested rather than pay the $28 for a bottle of Scotch he ordered at Ciro’s night club.
Located on the Sunset Strip, Ciro’s was a celebrity magnet hot spot during the 40′s and 50′s and when Shubert refused to foot the bill, the manager placed him under citizens arrest.
Shubert claimed he’d been to night clubs and country clubs across the country and never had paid more than $18 for a bottle of Scotch. He was booked on a charge of attempting to defraud an innkeeper, but was found innocent in court after a 45 minute deliberation of the jury, his lawyer arguing that he had simply tried to dispute the bill.
