The lodger had been imbibing rather freely, it is said, and was not in a very amiable mood. The appearance of Mrs. Donnely and her bill had about the same effect on Edward as the unfurling of a red flag has upon a bull. After describing a vigorous war dance about the house, he seized a chair and struck Mrs. Donnely on the head with it, lacerating her forehead.“
