The low and unprofitable vice of swearing, now so prevalent, was so little practiced among the Anglo-Saxons, in conversation, that among all their laws there is not one against this vice. This cannot be said to be owing to the negligence of their Legislators, since we see in those ancient laws great penalties laid upon such as violated the Sabbath or a Feast.
