  26. twofingerswhiskey said: (Treasure Island was a column about Madrona, a fictional island off of BC that stood in for Saturna Island. It was all about west coast living and ended up as two compilation books.)
  27. twofingerswhiskey said: Jean Howarth was born in 1917 in Manitoba and wrote for the Province in BC. She reported on the last hanging execution (a young gay man) and the Second Narrows Bridge collapse. In 1960 she moved to Toronto to work for the Globe & Mail. She became asst editor for 20 years and soon wrote the infamous Treasure Island column until 1989. She died in June 2004. She was genuinely a compassionate reporter who stood up for gay and minority rights when it was unpopular to do so.
