The paragraphs are from a column called Confessions of Gaston. Dodd Gaston was the pen-name of Jay Elmer House (1872 - 1936). He was born in Plymouth, Illinois, and raised in Erie, Neosho county, Kansas. House also wrote the column On Second Thought (which became pretty widely syndicated and ran for over 25 years; it was also compiled in book form). House used Confessions of Gaston to speak mostly about the things in life he didn’t understand, as well as to poke fun at himself: his lack of hair, his social foibles, and his ill-luck with ladies (although he did marry in 1911). He would later be mayor of Topeka for two terms (1915-1919), later moving to Philadelphia. He died of pneumonia during a visit with family in Topeka at 63.
