Are those weird animals what St. Louis thought African animals looked like? Like when they heard "giraffe" did they think of that weird things? Or are those just pre- Dr. Seuss hybrid animals?

Noo, they did know what the animals were, haha! They’d usually list what the composites were made up of underneath the puzzle’s solution. I think the idea is they’re kind of poking fun at Teddy Roosevelt and his excessive hunting, “another animal shot to pieces”.
