Researchers actually use those London missing dog adverts to map how our pets' names have changed throughout time. "Carlo" is a perfect example of one of the big pet-naming trends at the time which was to name dogs after Spanish pirates (Britain's enemy), giving the dog the image of being a mischievous rascal. This lead to other classic imagined "Spanish-sounding" names ending in "-o", such as Bingo and Pongo.
