I love the St Louis Post Dispatch, but I feel like it was the National Enquirer of its time.

It totally feels like that, doesn’t it? Very tabloid-y. Yellow journalism at it’s best! But to be fair, a lot of the 1895-1897 ones are usually taken from the Sunday magazine section (but not the later 1901-1909 ones, those are just crazy weekday headlines).
