Sheriff Pengally discusses the household of Frank Lloyd Wright and Mamah Borthwick. While Mamah’s husband had divorced her by this time, Frank’s wouldn’t until 1922 and they were considered to be living in sin. Mamah was murdered in 1914 in the couples home (along with 6 others, Frank’s staff) and some papers pointed out that this might be divine retribution for her sinful ways. Unmarried couples cohabiting could be subject to arrest with jail time or fines at the time, especially adulterers.
“Now will you tell me what two people who are leading a right kind of life want with four bathrooms on a Saturday night? Huh?”
