the Dixons Laundry 1899 photoset really grabbed my attention. what do you make of the woman with the dark eyes? do you think it's makeup? do you think she's a spirit? lol

Eye makeup wasn’t very common then so I don’t think that’s it! Anything more than a touch of power and a little rouge was pretty scandalous, and that lady’s eyes are super dark.

Honestly, working conditions were so terrible back then that I think she’s just dead tired, or maybe ill as well. 6 day work weeks were the norm (usually Sundays off though! thanks to blue laws, but Monday through Saturday), with 10-12 hour days being extremely common, so most lower class people were doing an average of 60 hours a week minimum. Then she’d have to go home, and if she had a family, do all their cleaning and washing up as well. Not to mention doing laundry then was pretty back breaking work in itself!
