I think they painted transluscent inks onto early film by hand to give movies color. (Might need to fact check myself here. Im guessing based on watching movies like A Trip to the Moon 1902) So it would be like really fast stain glass flashing before your eyes. Maybe that had some straining visual effect or was just shocking after only b&w
